India’s Parupalli Kashyap Wednesday became the first Indian to enter the men’s singles quarterfinals of Olympics badminton beating Sri Lankan Niluka Karunaratne over three games 21-14, 15-21, 21-9 in the London Games at the Wembley Arena here.
Sport Minister Ajay Maken congratulated Kashyap on Twitter. He tweeted: “KASHYAP on his day is a World Champ! Congrats KASHYAP! Congrats Coach GOPI! We are proud of both of your wards Saina & KASHYAP!”
The previous best performance was by Dipankar Bhattacharjee, who entered the third round at the 1992 Barcelona Games.
