Olympics badminton: Kashyap first Indian to enter quarterfinals

India’s Parupalli Kashyap Wednesday became the first Indian to enter the men’s singles quarterfinals of Olympics badminton beating Sri Lankan Niluka Karunaratne over three games 21-14, 15-21, 21-9 in the London Games at the Wembley Arena here.

Kashyap in QuatersSport Minister Ajay Maken congratulated Kashyap on Twitter. He tweeted: “KASHYAP on his day is a World Champ! Congrats KASHYAP! Congrats Coach GOPI! We are proud of both of your wards Saina & KASHYAP!”

The previous best performance was by Dipankar Bhattacharjee, who entered the third round at the 1992 Barcelona Games.
