While the whole world is concentrating on a nuclear Iran the regime is continuing its crackdown on the innocent people of Iran. Iran has one the highest numbers of executions. According to Iran Human Rights the number of execution has escalated since the uprising of 2009. In 2011 alone 676 people were executed of which only 416 were reported by the Iranian authorities. Among those executed were at least 4 juvenile offenders and 15 women. More than 80% of those executed were convicted of drug trafficking.
The reports from Amnesty International and Iran human rights groups all indicate that these numbers might even be higher. Unfortunately most of human right defenders of Iran are in jail. A recent one being Narges Mohammadi. Narges is the deputy head of the DHRC, the 39-year-old activist and journalist who was a close colleague of the Nobel peace laureate Shirin Ebadi who presided over the organization, she has been sentenced to 6 years in prison.
Let us not forget human rights Lawyer Abdolfattah Soltani who is sentenced to 18 years in prison, and Nasrin Stoudeh who is sentenced to 11 years behind bars. So who is there left to defend the Human rights in Iran?
Can’t stop thinking about what Majid Tavakoli (Student leader serving a 8 years prison term), said “The regime will do anything in order to divert international attention from human rights to nuclear issues “. And so it has become that. How easy has it been for the regime to divert everyone’s attention to the “nuclear propaganda “. Meanwhile they continue their imprisonment and execution of people.
It is time for the international community to stand up and tell the Iran’s regime that it needs to conform to the international human right standards before it’s too late. Every minute we waste someone’s life might be in danger. An example of that is Saied Malkpour (Canadian citizen) who is on death row as we speak. It is a shame that the country that started the human rights laws centuries ago breaks those laws at an alarming rate. Let your voice be heard and ask your government to condemn Iran’s regime for such acts.
In memory of Farzad Kamangar, Ali Heidarian, Shirin Alam-Holi, Farhad vakili and Mehdi Islamian who were executed May 8th of 2010 in the notorious Evin Prison without the knowledge of their lawyers or family.
