The curious case of Palestinian Khader Adnan

Khader Adnan, a Palestinian locked behind bars by Israel and awaiting a hearing has been on a hunger strike for past 65 days. In the modern times he is the one of the few who has gone on such a strike after Irish national Bobby Sands protested against the removal of Special Category Status in 1981.

Latest reports suggest that the Israeli court could now hear appeal for the Palestinian hunger-striker detained without charge on terror suspicion.

Khader Adnan Mohammad Musa, is a Palestinian prisoner of Israel.  He is a baker in his hometown of Arraba, Jenin with a Masters Degree in Economics. Midnight on December, 17, 2011, Khader was arrested by the Israeli Army. The next day, Adnan began a hunger strike in protest of the conditions that he endured. This strike has lasted more than 60 days, the longest in Palestinian history.

On December 30, 2011, Adnan were transferred to the hospital and refused treatment by Israeli doctors. Physicians at the Human Rights Israel expressed “grave concern” over his condition. Adnan’s weight dropped from 200 lbs to 121 lbs. Adnan has been under “administrative detention” since January 2012 and until 8 May, when Israeli authorities decide if his release is “necessary.”

Randa Adnan, wife and mother of two, currently expecting, stated that Adnan is emaciated, dirty and shackled to his hospital bed.

On February 16, 2011, Adnan’s lawyers petitioned Israel’s Supreme Court for release stating that Adnan is in “immediate danger of death.” A hearing has not been set.

Around 5,000 protesters demonstrated in Gaza City on February 17, 2011 chanting “We are all Khader Adnan.”
