US crime rate up The rate of violent crime in the US went up for the first time in nearly two decades, the justice department said Wednesday.

Violent crime in the country rose by 17 percent last year, which meant 5.8 million Americans age 12 and older, or 22.5 percent of every 1,000, were victims of such crime.

It is the first increase since 1993, Xinhua reported. The justice department report includes unreported crimes as well as those that were reported.

Many citizens admit they didn’t tell police about incidents in which they were victims. Roughly half of violent crime is unreported, according to the report.
