Two Victoria Cross (VC) medals awarded to World War I heroes have fetched 276,000 pounds (about $433,000) at a London auction, The Sun reported Friday.
The VC of Private Sidney Godley “for extraordinary bravery at the Battle of Mons in 1914″ was the first awarded in the war.
The 25-year-old volunteered to man a machine gun to allow his mates to retreat from the Germans. Private Godley, of East Grinstead town in West Sussex county, suffered severe injuries but survived.
The other Victoria Cross (VC) was awarded to 30-year-old Captain Arthur Kilby, of Cheltenham town, killed in action in the Battle of Loos, one of the major British offensives mounted on the Western Front in 1915 during World War I.
Western Front was a term used to describe the contested armed frontier in Europe between lands controlled by Germany to the east and the Allies to the west.
